  1.      This program is designed to present passages which are adapted 
  2.      for CLOZE exercises i.e you study the passage and then you try 
  3.      to fill in missing words in the text, taking care that your 
  4.      spelling is accurate and that the passage makes sense! For 
  5.      foreign words you will need to use accented characters, which 
  6.      are implemented by using the ALT key with the number
  7.      pad. A list of accented characters is obtained through the HELP 
  8.      menu.

  10.      French 'c'est' are counted as one word. Type the missing words

  14.                               SECRET PASSAGE
  15.      The computer holds a hidden passage of around 150 words.See if 
  16.      you can restore the passage by guessing words. For each word 
  17.      guessed correctly you get 10 points. You can ask for a random word 
  18.      to be presented by the computer but this will cost you 10 points. 
  19.      You can also ask for a brief look at the passage but this will 
  20.      cost a whole 100 points.

  37.                           RANDOM GAP CLOZE
  38.      Study the passage carefully beforehand.  Make sure you understand 
  39.      it completely and look carefully at spellings and at 
  40.      grammatical endings. Pay particular attention to accented 
  41.      characters in foreign language texts.  Fill in the gaps 
  42.      sequentially till the passage is complete.You get one point for 
  43.      each correct word inserted. The word must be absolutely identical 
  44.      with the original, but you can ignore punctuation and capital 
  45.      letters. If you are absolutely stuck you can type the letter 
  46.      "w" and the missing word will appear, but you will forfeit 
  47.      two points each time you take advantage of this facility.

  62.                     PRESET GAP CLOZE
  63.      Study the passage carefully beforehand, making sure you 
  64.      understand it. After you have studied the passage you are 
  65.      presented with it again, this time with gaps to fill in. In this 
  66.      exercise the missing words which you have to insert have been 
  67.      carefully selected and are not the result of a random 
  68.      gap-making process. It is important, therefore, to study the 
  69.      passage very carefully and to look closely at words which have 
  70.      special features (orthographical, grammatical, semantic) which 
  71.      might make them candidates for particular attention.

  85.                TRANSLATION CLOZE (Foreign Languages only)
  86.      Study the passage looking closely at idiomatic phrases and 
  87.      expressions. When the passage is  presented again there will be 
  88.      large gaps for you to fill in, representing missing phrases.
  89.      You will be given a native language  version of the phrase you 
  90.      are required to insert each time in the gap. You must remember, 
  91.      however, the EXACT phrase that was used in the passage. So don't 
  92.      forget to study the passage very carefully. It is like a jig-saw 
  93.      puzzle - only one piece will fit!  There is some tolerance of 
  94.      missing punctuation but none of mis- spelling and wrong or 
  95.      missing accents!

  97.                  CREATING/EDITING CLOZE PASSAGES
  98.      Just type the new passage or changes to an existing passage into 
  99.      the text box, taking care not to exceed 200 words. Let the text 
  100.      wrap normally at the end of lines. Put in normal punctuation# as 
  101.      you go along. A punctuation character count as part of the 
  102.      word that precedes it. Watch that you separate every word from
  103.      the following one by a space, ONE space only. Use hyphens instead 
  104.      of curved brackets or inverted commas -as in this example- Take 
  105.      particular care to ensure that a space follows every punctuation 
  106.      character. 
  107.      To select a word to be replaced by a gap in the Preselected gap 
  108.      activity put the #-sign after it thus.# To select complete phrases 
  109.      for Translation Cloze use square brackets, placing the left bracket 
  110.      in front of the first word of the phrase, and the right bracket at 
  111.      the end of the last word of the phrase [just like this.] Take care 
  112.      that bracket# and #-signs always come after any punctuation 
  113.      characters. Do not attempt to format the text in any way. If you 
  114.      study the passage in a text-editor or word-processor you will see 
  115.      words broken at the end of lines. This is normal and does not
  116.      affect the way the passage is presented by the program.
  117.      If you have selected phrases you will be asked to supply versions
  118.      in the appropriate language to be translated in the Translation
  119.      Cloze activity.
